Supporting Families in the First 1001 Days

At The Springfield Project, we are committed to giving every child the best possible start in life. Our work with Birmingham’s Children’s Centres and Family Hubs places us at the heart of supporting families through the crucial early years — from pregnancy to a child’s second birthday, known as the First 1001 Days.

This period is now widely recognised as a foundation for lifelong health, wellbeing, learning, and development. The recently updated First 1001 Days Directory from Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust reinforces the importance of strong, joined-up support during this time.

Our Role in the First 1001 Days

As a key partner within Birmingham Forward Steps, we work alongside health visiting teams, early years specialists, and community organisations to ensure families in Balsall Heath access the right help, at the right time. Our offer includes:

  • Early years and family support delivered through our Children’s Centre
  • Antenatal and infant feeding guidance
  • Stay-and-play, parenting programmes and targeted early help
  • Support for maternal and infant mental health, with clear pathways into specialist services
  • Warm, culturally aware support for families facing additional challenges

Putting Families First

Our team prides itself on creating welcoming, nurturing spaces where parents and carers feel heard, understood, and supported. Whether we are helping a new parent adjust to life with a baby, connecting a family to health services, or offering guidance on child development, our work is rooted in compassion, trust, and partnership.

Working Together for Better Outcomes

We will continue using the updated directory to strengthen referral pathways, broaden staff awareness, and ensure families benefit from the full network of support available across the city.

🌞 Summer Stay & Play Highlights at The Springfield 🌞 Summer Stay & Play Highlights at The Springfield Project 🌞 Startwell

We've had a fantastic few weeks celebrating International Animal Days, Love Parks Week, and the Festival of British Archaeology.

The children enjoyed exploring animal habitats, painting with cars, exploring playdough, rhyme time with a parachute, making fruit kebabs, creating artwork and bracelets, and developing their physical skills through Sammy Skills, Active Azra and 180 Katie activities.

Thank you to all the families who joined us. It has been wonderful to see the children learning, growing in confidence and having so much fun together. We look forward to seeing you at our next Stay & Play session! 💚🌈

Here are some highlights from our Creative Wednesd Here are some highlights from our Creative Wednesday! 🎨✨

Our Creative Wednesdays art group had an exciting trip to see their own work on display, as part of the Unlocking the Vaults launch event at the Exchange, Birmingham.

The exhibition celebrates the heritage and stories of the Exchange building which used to be the headquarters of Birmingham Municipal Bank. The bank, once a major feature of Birmingham life, was opened after the First World War as a means for the people of the city to rebuild their lives. It even had a branch here in Sparkhill.

Our participants, working with group leader Sajida Asif, produced a beautiful quilt, using cyanotype photography and embroidery, responding to these stories and their own memories of visiting the Municipal Bank. The quilt is on display as part of the free exhibition until Nov 7th at the Exchange Building, Centenary Square.
